On Wednesday, November 14, 2007, The Africa-America Institute (AAI) and the British Consulate-General hosted a panel discussion and reception on Teacher Training in Africa: Approaches & Challenges in honor of International Education Week. Panelists compared approaches to teacher education and training in different African countries and discussed the challenges facing the teaching profession in Africa today. Topics under discussion included the Education for All—Fast Track Initiative (FTI), the need to attract more teachers to the profession, mentoring and professional motivation, and ways to improve the quality of teaching in Africa. The event was held in New York City at the Office of the British Consulate-General and had an audience of one hundred individuals, hailing from New York’s academic, diplomatic, nonprofit, and corporate circles.
