Mohamed Helmy is an Egyptian serial entrepreneur and founder of Progrss, a global data-driven media organization focused on supporting cities’ transformation to the 21st century.
An alumnus of AAI’s Transformational Leadership Program (TLP), Helmy has been driven by his passion to empower people, challenge the status quo and establish game-changing startups. Helmy is involved in both for-profit and not-for-profit projects, bringing his expertise in both worlds to action.
In 2013, Helmy was named one of the Top 100 Innovators for the Next Century by the Rockefeller Foundation. In addition, the United Nations Correspondents Association recognized Helmy for Innovation in Peace Building through his work with MasterPeace, a peace-building organization he co-founded. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon presented the award.
MasterPeace was established in 2010 when Helmy joined forces with Dutch social entrepreneur Ilco Van Der Linde to co-found the global, bottom-up peace movement. Under Helmy’s leadership as CEO, MasterPeace has spread to more than 40 countries within five years, reaching millions and involving thousands of community leaders.
Through his diversified family portfolio in Egypt, Helmy is also an investor in several industries varying from real estate, hospitality and corporate catering, to co-working, construction and agriculture. He is shareholder at The District, a renowned co-working space in Egypt and one of the Middle East’s first. The District has been home to some of the most innovative startups in the region and has been featured in Forbes, Reuters and Al Jazeera for its pioneering and inspiring work environment.
Helmy is also a shareholder in EWS, a high-end infrastructure engineering company with projects in Egypt, UAE and Iraq, serving top clients across the region such as USAID, National Security of Egypt, the Egyptian Armed Forces and Intercontinental Hotels Group. Helmy is also a lead investor in CairoDeli, an event catering company serving various businesses, embassies and non-profits in Egypt.
His leadership skills were recognized by the Coca-Cola Africa Foundation and led to his selection for the Best Leader in Africa Scholarship, through which he earned an M.B.A. in Marketing and Strategy from Emory University in Atlanta. Helmy holds a BSc in Electronics and Communication from Cairo University’s Faculty of Engineering.
