News & Events Update

Beyond completing the ninth year of its Africa Thursday Congressional Series, in coordination with the House Subcomittee on Africa and Global Health, and hosting a record-breaking 23rd Annual Awards Gala, AAI held several events and meetings in New York and Washington, D.C. as well as in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, and South Africa in 2007. In New York and Washington, D.C., AAI organized several educational outreach events including a panel discussion and reception at the British Consulate-General in New York on Teacher Training in Africa. Several of AAI's most recent events are listed below.

On the African continent, AAI was represented at several major conferences and held a number of meetings and receptions. In March 2007, Mr. Kofi Boateng, AAI's Chief Operating Officer, travelled to Maputo, Mozambique and Nairobi, Kenya, where he visited the site of the new library being built at the United States International University. AAI is the financial and administrative overseer of the project. He then made his way to Johannesburg, South Africa and visited with current AAI participants of the Namibian Government Scholarship and Training Program (NGSTP) at AAI's South Africa Office.

In May 2007, Ms. Fiona Dunne, AAI's Senior Director of Corporate and External Affairs, travelled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to attend the Africa Travel Association's (ATA) 32nd Annual Congress. While in Ethiopia, Ms. Dunne held meetings with representatives from the African Union and the U.S. Embassy, as well as AAI alumni who were participating in the ATA Congress.

In July 2007, Ms. Mora McLean, AAI's President & CEO, attended the Sixth U.S.-Sub-Saharan Africa Trade and Economic Cooperation Forum in Accra, Ghana. While in Accra, Ms. McLean hosted a dinner for 20 AAI Ghanaian Alumni, including Dr. Ablade Glover, renowned African artist, Nik AmarteFio, CEO of African Select Mining, and Dr. Araba Sefa-Dedeh, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Ghana Medical School.

And most recently in November of 2007, Ms. McLean travelled to Maputo, Mozambique to visit AAI's office there, meet with Mozambican alumni of AAI-administered programs and host a reception, which attended by nearly 100 alumni, including Paulo Zucula, Director of the National Disaster Management Institute, Lara Carrilho, Programme Officer for the World Food Programme, Rafael Massinga, Principal Reseacher for the National Institute for Agronomic Research (INIA), and Ana Maria Dai, General Practitioner for the Ministry of Health in Mozambique.
