AAI Program Update
-------------------------------------------------

TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM (TLP):

In January 2007, AAI in partnership with The Coca Cola Africa Foundation (TCCAF), Emory University's Goizueta Business School, The Aresty Institute of Executive Education at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and the United States International University (USIU) in Nairobi, Kenya launched TLP. The program goals are to build business skills and enhance the capacity of professional management and leadership in Africa.

TLP has had a successful first year with its first cohort of particpants, three individuals from Namibia and Zimbabwe, attending a short-term training program at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in May 2007. Participants took short courses on executive and nonprofit management, building a skill set that will aid the work they do in positions of leadership in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) back home. Upon completion of the program, Mr. Phillimon Mlambo and Ms. Lena Zamchiya have returned to Zimbabwe to their positions as the Executive Director of Junior Achievement Zimbabwe and the Country Director for The Boost Fellowship/SIFE Zimbabwe, respectively. Ms. Johanna Cloete has returned to her position as Country Director of Junior Achievement Namibia. In October 2007, a fourth participant from South Africa, Ms. Mandy Govender, attended the short-term training program at Wharton. Ms. Govender has since returned to her position as Managing Director at Dance4Life, an NGO that educates young people about HIV/AIDS through music and dance.

Currently, TLP is supporting 26 participants in long-term degree programs in the United States and Kenya. 25 participants from Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania are pursuing Executive Master's in Organizational Development at the USIU in Kenya, and one additional participant from Egypt is working towards an MBA degree at Emory University's Goizueta Business School in Atlanta, Georgia.

An additional five participants will attend the short-term training program at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 2008.
