AAI to Host This Year’s First Leadership Training Program

January 31, 2013

The Africa-America Institute will hold its first leadership training program aimed at strengthening the professional managerial capacity in African civil societies and small business sectors this February in Nigeria and South Africa, while setting its sights on quadrupling its impact by training a thousand more leaders by 2015.

The Transformational Leadership Program, known as TLP, is a multi-year program that provides non-degree professional certificate and business degree training for African managers of Africa-based NGOs working in the fields of health, education, environment and entrepreneurship, and African small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Launched in 2006, the AAI leadership program has helped to develop a world-class management training curricula at a consortium of African business schools, including: United States International University (USIU) in Kenya; the Enterprise Development Centre of Pan-African University in Nigeria; and the University of Stellenbosch’s Business School in South Africa.

The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation, the program’s inaugural and primary funding partner, committed a five-year grant of $2.5 million for managerial training, which concludes in Oct. 2013. Some 13 trainings for 120 African professionals — alumni of previous leadership training programs – will take place in 2013 in Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya.

With the Coca-Cola Africa Foundation grant ending in 2013, AAI is seeking an investment of $1.5 million from additional partners to expand its programming to achieve a greater impact on Africa’s NGO leaders. The advanced education and trainings would focus on strengthening Africa’s NGO sector in their delivery of some of the most fundamental needs to their communities including healthcare, housing, education, clean water and sanitation.

An investment would enable AAI to quadruple its impact by training a total of 1,000 more leaders by 2015. To date, TLP has provided scholarships to more than 300 individuals from Botswana, Ghana, Gambia, Egypt, Kenya, Mali, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

“AAI is excited about the training that will take place on the continent this year, and believe there’s a great opportunity for us to expand the Transformational Leadership Program to equip thousands of additional NGO leaders with proper management skills to optimize their service delivery in addressing a host of development challenges,” said Amini Kajunju, President and CEO of The Africa-America Institute.
