NEW YORK – October 17, 2012 – The Africa-America Institute (AAI), a leading New York-based international education and policy organization, announced today that The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation has awarded the organization a grant of $750,000 to support its leadership training program aimed at strengthening the professional managerial capacity in African civil societies and small business sectors. AAI is dedicated to advancing education and professional training for Africans, and promoting engagement between Africa and America through education, training and dialogue.
The award will support AAI’s Transformational Leadership Program (TLP), a multi-year program that provides non-degree professional certificate and business degree training for African managers of Africa-based NGOs working in the fields of health, education, environment and entrepreneurship, and African small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The two-year grant will assist AAI in facilitating three events in Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa to equip 120 African professionals — alumni of previous leadership training programs – in knowledge, training, management and leadership skills for professional development and success.
Launched in 2006, the AAI leadership program has helped to develop a world-class management training curricula at a consortium of African business schools, including: United States International University (USIU) in Kenya; the Enterprise Development Centre of Pan-African University in Nigeria; and the University of Stellenbosch’s Business School in South Africa.
The grant, to be implemented in 2012 and 2013, will strategically engage Coca-Cola business units and increase public awareness about the leadership program and its impact through a broader public dialogue on leadership development, NGOs, social entrepreneurship, and impact sustainability in Africa.
“AAI is pleased to announce this important grant to continue our partnership with The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation,” said Amini Kajunju, President and CEO of The Africa-America Institute. The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation provided AAI with initial funding to launch the leadership training program in 2006.
“This grant will assist African managers in the nonprofit and small business sectors in building professional leadership and management skills to dramatically improve their service delivery and productivity to eventually boost economic growth in African countries,” said Kajunju.
To date, TLP has provided scholarships to more than 300 individuals from Botswana, Ghana, Gambia, Egypt, Kenya, Mali, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
