GT_2014Web-Banner_250x250_BlueAlt-150x150The Africa-America Institute (AAI) is joining #GivingTuesday, a nationwide effort to harness the collective power of individuals, corporations and nongovernmental organizations, to inspire people to take collaborative action to improve communities in the U.S. and worldwide by contributing to important causes to help create a better world.

Taking place December 2, 2014 – the Tuesday after Thanksgiving – #GivingTuesday seeks to build a national movement dedicated to giving around the holiday shopping season, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days synonymous with holiday shopping.

With an urgent shortage of skilled, trained healthcare workers in Africa, AAI will kick off its Year End Fundraising appeal with a campaign to raise funds to provide scholarships to nursing students at William V.S. Tubman University’s Nursing Program in Harper, Maryland County, Liberia. The Public Health and Nursing programs started enrollment of students in September 2009.

“Given the global health spotlight in West Africa, AAI is working with our institutional partner Tubman University in Liberia to help build a strong and effective health workforce by training skilled nurses for the long-term care and well-being of Liberians and to respond to emergency situations like infectious diseases,” Amini Kajunju, AAI President & CEO.

“We hope AAI supporters and new friends will give generously to training nurses in Liberia during #GivingTuesday and our Year End Appeal,” said Kajunju.

By leveraging social media for #GivingTuesday, beginning in mid-Nov., AAI will raise awareness about the urgent need for creating sustainable healthcare systems and training African health care workers, and mobilize its social media network to raise funds for Tubman University’s Nursing program.

“William V.S.Tubman University is pleased to partner with The Africa-America Institute to support the training of nurses in Liberia,” said Barbara A. Simmons, J.D., Inaugural Dean and Associate Professor of International Education at Tubman University.

“We are grateful for all of the supporters worldwide who are answering AAI’s appeal to increase the number of trained medical professionals in Liberia. Tubman University is the only institution of higher learning in Southeastern Liberia. Support of AAI in this effort will contribute to a sustainable future for post-Ebola Liberia,” said Simmons.

AAI is participating in a movement of more than 10,000 organizations in 46 countries that are coming together for a special call to action that mobilizes supporters to give back on #GivingTuesday and throughout the giving season.
