Virtual Screening of “Where I Became” with Opening Remarks by AAI’s Mora McLean

The Africa-America Institute’s President Emerita and Resident Historian, Mora McLean, will give opening remarks at the webinar on Friday, March 24th, following a virtual screening of the international award winning documentary, Where I Became. 

Where I Became tells the incredible journeys of 14 South African women who left Apartheid South Africa in the 1980s and 1990s on scholarships to attend an elite college in the United States.  The film weaves the stories of these women from diverse backgrounds to show how they summoned courage, faith, and determination in leaving home and family for the opportunity of a lifetime.

The webinar will open with remarks from Mora McLean followed by Teresa Clarke talking with the film’s producers Tandi Njboe, Head Relationship Banking Proposition – BCB SA at Standard Bank, Jane Dawson Shang, Executive Producer and Co-Founding Partner, Thinta Films, and women featured in the film Verna Lalbeharie, Kholeka Mabuya, and Thilo Simadari.
