State of Education in Africa Conference

AAI’s 6th Annual State of Education in Africa Conference (SOE)

In 2020, AAI is excited to take the SOE digital with a series of live broadcast panels throughout the remainder of the year. By live streaming the conference panels across the globe, AAI will continue to grow our audience while also increasing representation and panelist participation from various parts of the African continent and across the globe.

Overview

The Africa-America Institute hosts the annual State of Education in Africa Conference (SOE) to convene education innovators, decision- makers, funders, students and stakeholders to discuss bold approaches to transforming and bolstering the global competitiveness of Africa’s higher education ecosystem. At the SOEs in New York City, Lagos, Nairobi, Abidjan, and Dakar, participants shared their visions, learnings, and effective action plans to respond to the rapidly changing landscape on the Continent, including Teacher Training, Equitable Partnerships between Campus and Community, Reforming STEM Education, the Globalization of the “Made in Africa” brand, Technical & Vocational Education and Training, transferability of course credit, Innovative Financing for Education, and Narratives on Africa and Afro- descendant women and men. Student-panelists alongside government and international agency officials, such as World Bank and IFC, chartered enterprising ideas for transforming higher education in Africa.

In 2019, Her Excellency Mrs. Hajia Aïssata Issoufou Mahamadou, First Lady of the Republic of Niger, opened both days of the conference. We welcomed the participation of multiple Ministers of Higher Education including the host country, Senegal’s Hon. Dr. Cheikh Oumar Anne, and the African Union to discuss inter-university cooperation, mobility of students, researchers and faculty. And, we launched our first Student Summit as a pre-conference event, welcoming 8 schools from Senegal, Niger, Ghana & Nigeria. In 2018, we were honored by a Head of State, His Excellency Alassane Ouattara, President of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, to present the opening keynote.

The 5th Annual State of Education in Africa conference (SOE) is a 3-day event of engaging, inspiring and challenging discussions on transforming African Higher Education for global competitiveness. The SOE brings together Higher Education stakeholders, which includes governments, academia, private sector and global philanthropy, to discuss the evolution required by the sector to build future capacities of emerging professionals and African leaders.

We will continue to include student participation throughout the conference as contributors to each panel. This year, we will also broaden their engagement to host a half-day Student Summit to support student-led engagement on key issues in Higher Education from their unique perspectives.
